At the national level, TFG continues to track US funds released for conservation through the Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA) the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). As the US pledged $1 billion for Fast Start financing in support of the REDD+ mechanism and the Copenhagen Accord, USAID and TFCA will be dramatically ramping up their funding allocations through 2012. We will be assessing how much of the committed funds are disbursed, through which funding vehicles, and whether or not it’s possible to tether dollars spent to actual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Keep an eye out for updated agency funding summaries, similar to TFG’s April 2006
investigative report on TFCA that showed stalled implementation of the TFCA in 2005
and 2006, despite US government pronouncements during climate negotiations.
By November 2006, the US had completed three new TFCA agreements, totaling more
than $26 million dollars.
