Thomas has over 16 years of technical and management experience in sustainable agriculture, livelihoods, community development and field office management, with over 7 years of field experience in sub-Saharan Africa.

He currently is a food security and livelihoods advisor for Save the Children US, providing technical and strategic support for programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.  He also coordinates the Africa Pastoral Initiative for Save the Children International, an entity based in the Horn of Africa with a mission to inspire breakthroughs in pastoral programming and policy development in order to achieve immediate and lasting change in the lives of pastoral children.  He recently completed a 3-year assignment as Save the Children in Uganda’s (SCiUG) Program Development Director, a role in which he managed overall technical support and strategic leadership to SCiUG’s program portfolio (2009- $18 million annual budget, 60+ projects, 320 staff, emergency/post-conflict and recovery/ development programs)

Thomas also works as a consultant on a range of sustainable food security and food production projects in the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa- most recently providing technical guidance to USAID’s Urban Gardens Program in Ethiopia- at present the world's largest project focused on urban agriculture. 

When not trying to help grow or produce food in a variety of environments, he spends time as owner/operator of Cold Spring Aloes- a plant nursery devoted to the research, propagation and sales of plants in the genus Aloe.  Much of his ‘off-time’ in Africa is spent tracking down and researching aloes in largely inaccessible areas.  

Thomas has a Masters degree in Humanitarian Assistance from the Friedman School of Nutrition and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and is a 5-time world Frisbee champion.
